Each DNS record has a purpose. Edit records at the provider hosting your authoritative DNS; a cPanel change will not affect a zone managed elsewhere.

What to do

  1. A maps a hostname to an IPv4 address; AAAA does the same for IPv6. Use only destinations actually configured for your service.
  2. CNAME aliases a hostname to another hostname. Follow your DNS provider’s rules for the root domain.
  3. MX routes incoming email; its priority affects which mail servers are preferred.
  4. TXT carries verification and email-authentication data such as SPF and DMARC. Preserve existing values when connecting a new service.
  5. In cPanel, use Zone Editor when cPanel hosts the authoritative zone. Save the original record before editing.
